Divorcing Facebook? Really!? eBook Audrey Wagner Reviews

Has Facebook consumed your life? Possibly like Audrey Wagner the process has gradually taken increasing amounts of time and energy from your life. Now you want your life back. If you are one of these people (and there are probably millions of them), then you need to read DIVORCING FACEBOOK? REALLY!?

Wagner has crafted an easy-to-read yet well-written book with short chapters and thoughtful application sections. As she writes in the opening pages, "The subject of this book is a particular relationship with Facebook that may be grounds for divorce from the site...Simply put, some people would be happier, more peaceful, and more productive without a Facebook account. I turned out to be one of those people, and I'm guessing I am not an anomaly." (Page 4-5)

I enjoyed this book and recommend it. From my years in publishing, one of the most difficult areas for any writer to see is something not on the page. My concern about this topic is the lack of middle ground in Wagner's approach--all into Facebook or cancelling your account. For some people, that is the only option. What is not covered is a more modest step of intentionally limiting your time on this social media network. Just go to your app store or use Google and you will find programs which will temporarily block your social media accounts until you release it. Then you can work intensely on a project for a few hours or a few days, and then return to your accounts.

As a reviewer, Wagner sent me a paperback copy of DIVORCING FACEBOOK? REALLY!? in exchange for my honest review. I liked this book. It is worth getting and reading.
Lately, I’d been considering saying “goodbye” to my Facebook friends, but hadn’t quite decided to do it. This fast paced book shows clearing that many Facebook relationships may be grounds for divorce as they beckon us to spend more and more time on the site. It’s a self-guide of sorts for those whose relationships on Facebook are toxic. The author presents pros and cons to enable readers to evaluate whether to stay in this relationship. Her analogy between Facebook and a vacation rental is most apt. For her it was too much real estate with too high a price.

She further maintains that without Facebook, we are free to carefully choose what it is we don’t want to miss. “Facebook can’t make up miss out any less than we already do, being the finite, limited beings that we are,” she says.

Chapter 7 addresses our delusions and enables us to consider seven of them that exist more in our feelings than in reality. As your read this short book, you may conclude that “the cyber rope tying you to Facebook is woven of hollow emotional highs.”

The author has not written this book to convince you to quit. Rather she has given you pros and cons to make your decision.

If you do decide to quit Facebook, she suggests three things to help you do it, the final one being, “Search online to obtain the most current instructions on permanently deleting your Facebook account.”

When telling others you will no longer be on Facebook, you are free to say as little or as much as you want, omitting any statement you might feel an urge to explain later.

I’m glad I was given this book in exchange for my review. It’s been a useful gift. Like many folks, I don’t have time to do everything I think I would enjoy doing. Having read this book in one sitting, I have decided to free up some time by divorcing Facebook by the end of this month.

The author had been a longtime Facebook user. But she gave it up and even dedicated this book "to all those who will be happier without Facebook."

It presents a road map to help you decide if it's time to walk out and then shows you how to do so.

I'm not ready to do so, but nevertheless thought her advice was spot on. I also liked her recommendation on what to do when you file the papers (to quote from one of her chapter subjects)
If you have chosen to leave Facebook, you may want to make the transition easier for yourself by sending a Facebook or email message to those you'd like to stay connected to. Let them know you are leaving the site, that they are important to you, and that you'd like to keep in touch. Give them your contact information, and ask them for their most up-to-date information. You could state that you look forward to spending time with them in person, over the phone and through email.

I also liked her tips to make things easier for you when and if you go this route.
I gave this book a 5 star rating because it was well written and straight to the point. She points out the pro's and Con's of Facebook and How and why a person can find themselves sucked in and addicted to it. I personally do not have these issues with FB but I have found myself going through similar experiences with another social media site. I have already readjusted how I use social media and if I ever feel the need to totally quit, this book will give you step by step instructions on how to do so.
If you are looking for some solid reasons to quit FB then read this
Divorcing Facebook is a very timely book for today. It is thoughtful, insightful, and witty. It takes a much needed look at how Facebook affects our everyday lives, for better and for worse. Even if you never plan to "divorce Facebook" it will help you keep it in the right priority in your life. A must read for every Facebook user!
